Tiffany Derry Makes History as MasterChef’s First Black Full-Time Judge

She’s serving up legacy!

From a teenager flipping pancakes at IHOP to now holding court as the first Black full-time judge on MasterChef, Tiffany Derry is proof that walking in your purpose will always make room for you, Essence reports.

At 42, the award-winning chef, entrepreneur, and founder of Tiffany Derry Concepts has become a household name, and not just because of the meals she plates. With a career shaped by determination, intention, and an unshakable love for food, Derry has carved out a path that is as seasoned as the dishes she creates.

Her culinary journey began with a dream and a drive, fueled early on by curiosity and sharpened through study, work, and a relentless pursuit of growth.

“I have gone somewhere every year in search of culinary experiences and to study,” she explained. “Since I was 20 years old, I made this vow to myself.” That commitment has taken her around the world, from Asia to the Caribbean and beyond, gathering flavors, stories, and techniques that make their way into her restaurants and menus back home in Texas.

But her latest achievement, joining MasterChef as a full-time judge, marks more than a career milestone. It’s a cultural one.

“It’s a little surreal,” she admitted. “I didn’t quite realize it until I saw it in writing one day… And then so many young chefs started reaching out. And then my heart just felt overwhelmed and lovely and beautiful.”

Derry joins culinary giants Gordon Ramsay and Joe Bastianich on one of television’s most-watched food competitions, and she brings with her something the show didn’t have before. “Female perspective, Black woman perspective,” she emphasized. “It’s very much global cooking. My palate is incredible. I have studied and cooked all over the world.”

That global lens shapes her voice on the show, but it’s her compassion that shapes her presence. A former competitor herself, Derry knows what it feels like to cook under pressure—exhausted, far from home, and expected to shine. “I feel like one of the things I do well is just talking to the person… Focus in. Get it done. Taste it again. Ask yourself, ‘Is that what you really want it to taste like?’”

Outside of MasterChef, Derry continues to transform the culinary landscape through her company T2D Concepts, which powers purpose-driven restaurants like Roots Chicken Shak and Roots Southern Table. With a mission to “create inclusive and equitable spaces through food,” Derry is intentional about how she runs her kitchen and who she creates space for.

For her, reimagining the restaurant industry also means reimagining work-life balance. “One of the things we do within the restaurant is we do four-day work weeks… Everybody works their 10 hours, and then now you get three days at home. I created a company that could do that, so that was very important to me.”

As a Black woman in a historically male-dominated industry, Derry is making room for others by showing that the kitchen doesn’t have to come at the cost of family, freedom, or fulfillment. “I hope that women who are watching can feel like they can do anything in this industry, and that there is no ceiling… My representation of being there is that everyone can do it if we work together.”

Whether she’s seasoning a sauce with allspice or speaking life into a new generation of chefs, Tiffany Derry is doing more than judging dishes; she’s modeling leadership, excellence, and possibility. And if her story tells us anything, it’s that the recipe for impact starts with knowing your purpose, honoring your craft, and being willing to pass the torch with love.
